Capital gains tax calculator: mutual funds, bonds, unlisted shares
Choose what you are selling, how long you have held it and the gain.
How it is calculated
Equity mutual funds: long term if held more than 12 months, taxed at 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year; short term at 20%. Debt funds bought from 1 April 2023: your slab rate, however long you hold. Listed bonds: long term after 12 months at 12.5%. Unlisted shares: long term after 24 months at 12.5%. Short-term gains on bonds and unlisted shares are taxed at your slab. A 4% cess applies; surcharge is ignored.
Worked example
An equity fund held 18 months with a ₹3 lakh gain: (₹3,00,000 − ₹1,25,000) × 12.5% × 1.04 = ₹22,750.
